In a remarkable and uncommon occurrence within the video game industry, the main theme for the upcoming Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio game, Stranger Than Heaven, has achieved significant global popularity despite not having been officially released. The track, showcased by Xbox during a special presentation alongside the new RGG Studio logo, has made a strong impact on Genius charts. As of the time of this article, it has reached the #3 position on the Top 100 most-consulted songs for the day, outranking international artist hits.
Ado and Snoop Dogg: An Explosive Collaboration
This is undeniably a historic milestone, marking the first Japanese song to enter the Genius Japan Top 10 prior to its official launch, having initially debuted at position 66. This massive success is attributed to an international collaboration that brings together Japanese star Ado, American rapper Snoop Dogg, singer Tori Kelly, and musician Satoshi Fujihara, the leader of Official HIGE DANdism.
Ado has described this project as an “extravagant” collaboration that defies comprehension. Beyond performing the theme, all four artists will take on active roles within the game: Snoop Dogg will voice Orpheus, Tori Kelly will portray Kelly Day, Ado will embody Keiko Shirai, and Satoshi Fujihara will be Takashi.
The musical composition is integral to the identity and narrative of Stranger Than Heaven, a spin-off of the Like a Dragon series. The game follows Makoto Daito and Yu Shinjo’s struggle for belonging amidst discrimination due to their mixed Japanese and Western heritage. In this installment, the protagonist takes on the role of a “showman” who must perform concerts across Japan. Players will utilize a music creation mechanic, collecting sounds from the environment—from the rumble of a train to the growls of enemies—to mix and craft original tracks.
What is Snoop Dogg’s Role?
While perhaps not entirely unexpected for some, one of the most notable surprises for many is the participation of American rapper Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., universally known as Snoop Dogg. He voices Orpheus, who is described as a “ruthless and charismatic” smuggler. Orpheus discovers Makoto and Yu on his ship and, instead of discarding them, decides to bring them to Kokura to work for him. Cordell Broadus, Snoop Dogg’s real-life son, also plays a key character in Stranger Than Heaven.
Furthermore, Cordell has described his father’s character, Orpheus, as a figure who leverages Makoto’s talent for languages and music for his own benefit. Thus, Snoop Dogg’s role in the Stranger Than Heaven narrative will be that of a mentor to Makoto Daito, the protagonist of this new adventure from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio.
