Aljamain Sterling finds it quite amusing that Sean O`Malley is getting another shot at the championship.
UFC has officially announced that Merab Dvalishvili will defend his bantamweight title against Sean O`Malley in the main event of UFC 316 on June 7 in Newark, New Jersey. This rematch is happening despite Dvalishvili`s clear victory in their previous fight and O`Malley`s inactivity since that loss last September, leading to a lukewarm fan reception.
O`Malley has been recovering from hip surgery, while Dvalishvili, a close friend and teammate of Sterling, successfully defended his title against the previously undefeated Umar Nurmagomedov at UFC 311 in January. Sterling shared his thoughts on social media regarding O`Malley getting a rematch.
In response to a question on Twitter, Sterling sarcastically commented, `Honestly, the UFC will always prioritize business. Would I have liked an immediate rematch after our first fight? Absolutely, given the circumstances. But I understand the business side, and O`Malley is an exciting fighter who has defeated several top 5 contenders. So, I guess he `deserves` this rematch considering the ranked opponents he`s faced.`
Initially, Sterling`s comments might have seemed like support for O`Malley, but his subsequent tweets clarified his sarcasm regarding O`Malley`s achievements in the octagon.
Sterling and O`Malley have a history, with O`Malley winning their UFC 292 fight by TKO to become champion. Sterling has since moved to the featherweight division, with a record of one win and one loss.
Sterling is expected to be in Dvalishvili`s corner on June 7, anticipating another victory for `The Machine.` Humorously, Sterling suggested that even if O`Malley loses again to Dvalishvili, they could consider a trilogy fight.
Why not offer him a trilogy?
