Milan Plans 18,000-Seat Arena for Potential NBA Europe Franchise
Milan is planning the construction of a large, modern arena, potentially with an 18,000-seat capacity, as part of an ambitious project to host a future NBA Europe franchise. Investment firm RedBird is currently evaluating the submission of a non-binding preliminary offer to the NBA for a team in this new basketball league, slated to launch in Fall 2027.
The realization of this project hinges on suitable infrastructure, as the current Assago Forum is considered outdated, and the Santa Giulia venue, while new for the Winter Olympics, is not designed for high-level basketball. NBA requirements specify a minimum capacity of 15,000 seats, but discussions suggest an arena capable of accommodating between 17,000 and 18,000 spectators.
Beyond capacity, the venue will need to meet very high standards for technology, fan comfort, and media infrastructure. This future arena will also be designed as a multifunctional hub, hosting concerts and various events for at least 150 to 200 days a year to maximize revenue and utility—an aspect deemed crucial for the project's viability.
The construction of such an infrastructure is expected to take three to four years, necessitating a temporary solution during this period. The prospect of an NBA presence in Europe is already generating significant excitement in the Lombard capital.
