German Women's Basketball Team: Aims for a World Cup Medal

Germany, set to host the Women's World Cup from September 4th to 13th, showcased its capabilities during a series of matches in Villeurbanne. The team secured convincing victories against South Korea (76-49), the Philippines (113-80), and Colombia (78-57). Driven by Leonie Fiebich (15 points, 8 assists), Germany also demonstrated resilience to overcome Nigeria (73-81).

National coach Olaf Lange emphasized the emotional significance of these successes, stating, "This is a very important victory for our team emotionally, as this group needed to prove itself."

However, the team faced notable absences in Villeurbanne, including Satou Sabally, Marie Gülich, and Luisa Geiselsöder, all currently injured. This situation partly contributed to a significant defeat against France (63-85), indicating that the German squad is not yet competitive with the world's top teams.

Olaf Lange explained his approach: "I wanted to see how we fared against teams of this caliber, identify our weaknesses and areas for improvement." He added that he gained "valuable insights." While admitting they "had no chance" against opponents of that level, he highlighted significant progress: "Before, there were moments when we stopped playing. It's different now; we are mentally stronger."

With over 30 years of coaching experience, and having previously led the German women's national team twice, Olaf Lange has introduced innovative training methods. Inspired by the American style, he favors a game without fixed positions, as mentioned by Frieda Bühner in an interview with SZ. This approach encourages fluid play, rapid ball movement, and a multitude of offensive options. When executed well, this strategy is elegant; however, it can sometimes appear chaotic if poorly coordinated.

Leonie Fiebich described her relationship with the coach: "He has good rapport with the girls, but he is also very demanding. He knows exactly what he wants and gives clear instructions. Despite this, he is approachable; he is very accessible."

The World Cup draw is scheduled for April 21st. In Germany, the main question is whether the women's national team can reach the podium in Berlin. The conclusion seems clear: the team is considered a promising outsider.
