Preview Rudi Garcia Defends Romelu Lukaku Amidst Napoli Dispute, Urges More Playing Time

Rudi Garcia, the current coach of the Belgian national team and a former Napoli tactician, has voiced his understanding and support for Romelu Lukaku. Garcia indicated that Lukaku is diligently following a ‘specific program’ to regain peak physical condition and expressed his hope that the striker will receive ‘more playing time’ upon his return to Napoli.

Garcia’s backing comes despite reports of Lukaku’s controversial decision to cancel his planned return to Naples during the international break, opting instead for individual training in Belgium. This move has reportedly caused friction within the club.

Belgian Coach Supports Lukaku Following Napoli Controversy

According to various sources, Lukaku’s actions are perceived as a breach of Napoli’s internal regulations, which is expected to result in a club fine. There are also suggestions that the Partenopei might exclude him from the squad if he does not report back by a specified deadline next week.

At a recent press conference, Garcia explained Lukaku’s situation: “Lukaku was not 100% fit, and he had to follow a specific program to recover.” He further elaborated on the psychological aspects of recovery, stating, “It’s normal for him to want to be at the top. When you are not, the mental aspect plays a significant role because there’s a fear of getting injured again. We understand him. Totti had the same injury, and we know it takes time to recover from something like that.”

The striker suffered a significant muscle injury during the pre-season, which has severely limited his appearances this season. He has played barely 60 minutes across all competitions, scoring one goal in seven outings.

Garcia continued to advocate for the player, asserting, “I hope Lukaku can return to Napoli soon and get more playing time there.” He stressed the broader importance of the situation: “It’s important for the club and for us that he returns to full fitness as soon as possible. We must convince everyone that Romelu needs to do what he thinks is best to get in his best shape, physically and mentally.”

It is noteworthy that Garcia, despite his past association with Napoli, reportedly has a strained relationship with the club’s president, Aurelio De Laurentiis. Last year, the coach famously commented that he cherished “everything” about his tenure at the club, with the sole exception of its owner.
