Gotham FC, Orlando Pride, and the National Women`s Soccer League (NWSL) have publicly expressed their strong support for Orlando Pride player Barbra Banda following an incident of hateful language directed at her during Gotham FC`s home game against Orlando Pride on Sunday.

Gotham FC stated they are aware of the incident and emphasized that such behavior is unacceptable and has no place in the league or stadiums. The club mentioned that stadium security addressed the individual involved during the game and is collaborating with the NWSL to investigate further and take appropriate action under the league`s Fan Code of Conduct.

Orlando Pride and the NWSL also released statements reinforcing their support for Banda and outlining further steps to address the situation. The league reiterated its commitment to providing safe and respectful environments for everyone, especially the athletes.

This public support comes after previous online abuse Banda faced in November, following her BBC Women`s Footballer of the Year award. The online attacks included comments from public figures, sparking widespread condemnation.

Orlando Pride, the NWSL Players Association, and NWSLPA executive director Meghann Burke previously voiced their support for Banda in response to the online bullying, with Burke directly criticizing J.K. Rowling for her remarks.

The recent incident marks a concerning escalation of abuse from online platforms to in-person events at NWSL games, highlighting the ongoing challenges in protecting players from hateful rhetoric.

Barbra Banda, a prominent player recognized as a 2024 NWSL MVP finalist and a reigning NWSL Shield and Champion winner, has faced increased scrutiny and abuse since gaining prominence for her performances, particularly after receiving the BBC award.

Gotham FC confirmed that the fan involved in the abusive language incident was addressed by security and monitored, but not removed from the stadium.

Orlando Pride is scheduled to play against San Diego Wave FC on Saturday at Inter & Co Stadium.
