An empty-net goal later sealed the win. Carolina`s goaltender, Frederik Andersen, made 18 saves. The Hurricanes will next face the winner of the series between the Florida Panthers and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
In the Western Conference, the Winnipeg Jets managed to avoid elimination by winning Game 5 against the Dallas Stars with a score of 4-0. Goalie Connor Hellebuyck stopped all 22 shots he faced, earning his second shutout of the series (both by the same score). Vladislav Namestnikov scored the opening goal, which proved to be all the home team needed. Nikolaj Ehlers added two more goals before Mark Scheifele completed the scoring with a shorthanded empty-net goal.
However, this game could lead to further complications for Dallas. Stars captain Jamie Benn was involved in a tussle with Scheifele and struck him, potentially resulting in a suspension for Game 6 on Saturday.
