Toronto traveled to South Florida on Friday evening and secured an impressive 2-0 victory in Game 6, beating the reigning champions effectively at their own style of play.
After a significant 6-1 loss in Game 5, the Maple Leafs appeared vulnerable, leading to questions about whether they had the strength left to prolong the series into Game 6. However, Toronto went into enemy territory and successfully neutralized Florida`s offense, which had been highly effective in the previous match.
Perhaps most significantly for the Maple Leafs, Auston Matthews netted the winning goal in the third period. He drove towards the Panthers` net on a rush and sent a sharp wrist shot past Sergei Bobrovsky, breaking the goalless tie.
This goal was Matthews` first of the series, marking a crucial moment for the Toronto captain, who had faced considerable criticism leading up to Game 6.
Now, the Maple Leafs and Panthers are set for a decisive Game 7 in Toronto on Sunday night. Before that, the Winnipeg Jets and Dallas Stars will compete in Game 6 on Saturday evening, with the Stars having an opportunity to secure their series win on home ice.
