NHL playoff action continued Wednesday, with the Maple Leafs securing a hard-fought victory over the Panthers to grab a 2-0 series advantage. Meanwhile, the Stars narrowly defeated the Jets in their first game.
Toronto`s experienced forwards pressured Florida`s goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky throughout the game. The teams traded goals, and Toronto finished the second period with a 3-2 lead after Max Domi scored late.
Early in the third period (5:33), Florida`s Anton Lundell scored a remarkable goal, corralling the puck from his skate and flipping it into the open net to tie the score at 3. But only 17 seconds later, Toronto`s Mitch Marner shot the puck, and it somehow went high over Bobrovsky`s blocker, giving the Maple Leafs a lead they wouldn`t lose.
In Winnipeg, Nino Niederreiter scored early in the second period to put the Jets ahead. However, Mikko Rantanen then took over for the Stars, scoring three straight goals in the period to achieve a natural hat trick. His final goal was credited after an attempted pass deflected off Jets defenseman Dylan Samberg during a power play. This was Rantanen`s second straight game with a hat trick.
Rantanen`s outstanding performance earned him a spot among the 3 Stars of the Night, recognizing the best players across the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Playoff action continues Thursday with the Capitals aiming to even their series against the Hurricanes, while the Golden Knights host the Oilers for Game 2.
