The NHL playoffs continued on Tuesday night as two more second-round series commenced. The Carolina Hurricanes secured a significant road victory over the Washington Capitals in overtime, while the Edmonton Oilers claimed Game 1 against the Vegas Golden Knights with a comeback performance.
In the initial matchup, the Hurricanes heavily tested Washington`s goaltender Logan Thompson throughout the game. Although prime scoring opportunities were scarce, Carolina maintained a significant territorial edge. Despite this, the Capitals held a 1-0 lead entering the third period, courtesy of a goal by Aliaksei Protas.
Logan Stankoven eventually scored for Carolina midway through the third period, leveling the game. The tie persisted until overtime, when Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin netted the game-winner with a shot that found its way through traffic and under Thompson`s pad, securing a 2-1 victory.
Meanwhile, in Las Vegas, the Golden Knights quickly established a 2-0 lead in the first period through two goals from captain Mark Stone. However, the Oilers rallied, with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl playing key roles, combining for four points on Edmonton`s subsequent two goals. Zach Hyman then scored the decisive game-winning goal with only a few minutes left.
As the Golden Knights pressed for an equalizer, Connor Brown sealed the 4-2 win and a 1-0 series lead for Edmonton with a spectacular solo effort.
Playoff hockey continues on Wednesday night. The Florida Panthers will attempt to level their series against the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 2, while the Winnipeg Jets will host the Dallas Stars as their series between Central Division rivals begins.
