The second round of the 2025 NHL playoffs delivered another evening of thrilling hockey action, as the Carolina Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knights both advanced a step closer to the conference finals. The Hurricanes achieved a shutout victory over the Washington Capitals in Game 3, while the Golden Knights secured their win through dramatic, last-second heroics from Reilly Smith.
In Raleigh, goaltender Frederik Andersen was stellar, completely shutting down the Capitals` offense for the entire 60 minutes. Andersen successfully stopped all 21 shots he faced, leading his team to a 4-0 shutout win. He was outstanding, and Carolina`s offensive contributions came from players throughout the lineup.
Andrei Svechnikov initiated the scoring with a remarkable individual effort in the second period, and Jack Roslovic finished the game with two points. On the Washington side, Logan Thompson struggled in net, allowing four goals on just 28 shots. He will need to rebound strongly in Game 4 if the Capitals hope to even the series at two wins each.
Across the continent, in Edmonton, the game between the Golden Knights and Oilers appeared destined for overtime after Connor McDavid tied the score at 3 with just over three minutes remaining in regulation. However, Reilly Smith had other plans.
As time wound down, Smith collected a loose puck in the high slot and executed a brilliant play. He faked out a couple of Oilers defenders, patiently skated around Edmonton goaltender Stuart Skinner, and banked the winning goal into the net off Leon Draisaitl`s stick with only 0.4 seconds left on the clock.
Sunday`s upcoming games have a high standard to meet after such excitement, but the scheduled matchups are poised for more intense moments. The day begins with a crucial Game 3 between the Winnipeg Jets and Dallas Stars, followed by the Toronto Maple Leafs attempting to put the Florida Panthers on the verge of elimination.
