The Carolina Hurricanes have secured their spot in the Eastern Conference Finals after defeating the Washington Capitals 3-1 in Game 5 on Thursday night, thanks to a crucial late goal from forward Andrei Svechnikov. Meanwhile, in the Western Conference, the Winnipeg Jets extended their season by shutting out the Dallas Stars 4-0 in Game 5.
Svechnikov`s goal marked his third consecutive game with a tally, coming at a time when Carolina had struggled to beat Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson for much of the contest. The Hurricanes also benefited from a stellar performance in net by Frederik Andersen, who stopped 18 of the 19 shots he faced. This victory sends the Hurricanes to their second Eastern Conference Final appearance in the last three seasons.
On the other side of the bracket, the Jets were lifted by a vintage performance from goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who turned aside all 22 shots for his second shutout of the series. Nikolaj Ehlers provided significant offensive punch, registering a pair of goals.
Following another night of intense playoff action, here`s a closer look at some of the most impressive individual performances from Thursday:
3. Andrei Svechnikov, RW, Hurricanes
Svechnikov continued to provide offensive leadership for the Hurricanes when it mattered most. He scored the pivotal go-ahead goal that helped propel Carolina to a 3-1 series-clinching win. With this late-game winner, Svechnikov became only the fourth player in Hurricanes (or Hartford Whalers) history to score a game-winning goal in the final two minutes of regulation during a playoff game.
The sequence leading to the goal late in the game saw defenseman Sean Walker initiate the rush with an outlet pass before receiving the puck back in the offensive zone. After a quick exchange with Svechnikov, Walker returned the puck, allowing Svechnikov to score from a seemingly impossible angle near the bottom of the face-off circle.
In a series where scoring opportunities were limited, Svechnikov consistently rose to the occasion when Carolina needed his offensive skills. This game-winner was his eighth goal of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, placing him second only to Dallas Stars standout Mikko Rantanen, who has nine. Svechnikov is expected to be one of the Hurricanes` key offensive assets when they face the winner of the Florida Panthers vs. Toronto Maple Leafs series in the next round.
2. Connor Hellebuyck, G, Jets
While Hellebuyck`s playoff journey has had its ups and downs, he delivered a spectacular performance when his team was facing elimination. He stopped all 22 shots he faced, helping Winnipeg secure the vital Game 5 victory and keep their season alive on Thursday.
Hellebuyck made a series of high-impact saves that thwarted the Stars` attempts to generate offense. Early in the second period, he showcased a sensational glove save on a backhand shot attempt from Thomas Harley, who was set up by Matt Duchene. Just as impressive, Hellebuyck contributed to offense by turning defense into attack. Later in the second, he held his ground and executed a perfectly-timed poke check to deny a dangerous play by Wyatt Johnston in front of the crease, a chance created by a terrific pass from Mikko Rantanen. This defensive stop quickly led to a transition play, culminating in a goal for Mark Scheifele off a fortunate bounce.
After allowing eight goals combined in the previous two contests, Hellebuyck was a dominant force in net in Game 5, resembling the impenetrable form he demonstrated with a shutout in Game 2 of this series. Although the reigning Vezina Trophy winner might not have been consistently elite throughout this postseason by his own high standards, he delivered his absolute best effort when it was needed most to extend Winnipeg`s playoff run.
1. Nikolaj Ehlers, LW, Jets
Having missed all but two games in the first round, Ehlers is clearly demonstrating his critical importance to the Jets` offensive strategy. He scored two goals on five shots and also registered a takeaway in Thursday`s crucial contest.
Early in the third period, Ehlers provided much-needed insurance during a Jets five-on-three power play. Mark Scheifele sent a cross-ice pass to Kyle Connor, who spotted a wide-open Ehlers near the net. Ehlers skated in and successfully slid the puck past Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger. This goal was Ehlers` fourth in four games since returning, a tally he later added to with an empty-net goal, giving him five in the series. Ehlers continues to be a vital offensive driver for the Jets.
