Preview NHL All-Time Goal Leaders: Alexander Ovechkin’s Rank

Alexander Ovechkin is getting closer to Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL goals record. In his chase of Gretzky, Ovechkin has surpassed numerous hockey legends while moving up the top 10 list.

From his rookie season in 2005-06, Ovechkin quickly became a high-scoring player, netting 52 goals and winning the Calder Trophy. Since then, Ovechkin has consistently maintained his incredible scoring ability, earning almost every possible award in hockey.

As he climbs the all-time goals ranking, Ovechkin has joined and overtaken some of the greatest players ever to play hockey. In 2022, Ovechkin secured sole possession of second place when he passed Gordie ‘Mr. Hockey’ Howe with his 802nd career goal.

Being positioned between Howe and Gretzky (and potentially surpassing both) is an impressive feat, as Ovechkin was already in esteemed company. Three-time Stanley Cup winner Steve Yzerman, a Detroit Red Wings legend, is at No. 10 on the list.

The only contemporary player comparable to Ovechkin in terms of longevity is Jaromir Jagr, who played for 24 seasons from 1990-2018. Jagr’s 766 goals rank fourth in NHL history, with the majority scored before Ovechkin joined the league.
