Loopy Godinez won her UFC Mexico fight and luckily avoided an embarrassing situation.
A video clip of Godinez`s fight with Julia Polastri went viral last Saturday. In the video, the strawweight fighter urgently told her corner between rounds that she had severe indigestion and was close to having an accident in the octagon.
Despite the issue, Godinez, ranked No. 11 in the MMA Fighting Global Rankings for the 115-pound division, managed to keep it together. She won a unanimous decision after a tough third round, ending her two-fight losing streak.
Both fighters were praised for their exciting fight. Godinez is thankful she got through the fight without any accidents.
“I think I started feeling sick on Friday. I had chills, but I thought it was just because I had very low body fat from weight loss,” Godinez told Inside Fighting. “I didn’t say anything. My coach also thought it was because of my low body fat. After the weigh-ins, I rehydrated, but I had diarrhea overnight and again right before entering the cage.”
“I think between rounds, I felt it again, and I thought, ‘Oh no.’”
Godinez, who is originally from Mexico but fights out of Canada, hopes to compete at the UFC 320 event in Guadalajara on September 13. She joked about having a solution if she faces similar digestive problems again.
“Maybe next time, if I feel like this, I could wear a diaper,” Godinez said. “Maybe that will help.”
For now, Godinez is happy to be back to winning after losing to top contenders Mackenzie Dern and Virna Jandiroba in her previous fights. She believes mental strength was key to getting through her fight with Polastri and avoiding a potentially embarrassing moment.
“I tried not to think about it before the fight,” Godinez said. “Even if I felt something, the more you think about it, the more you hurt yourself. So, I just thought, whatever, I’ll be fine. Not everyone entering the cage is 100 percent. I just dealt with it and hoped for the best, and I felt it between rounds.”
“Luckily, nothing serious happened. I felt it, I said it, and now it’s out there, and that’s it.”
For newer fans, it’s worth noting that several fighters have lost control of their bowels during a fight before. Justine Kish`s fight against Felice Herrig is one example, and Tim Sylvia is another.
Any such accident could lead to disqualification, although it`s rare to see that actually happen.
Let’s move on to other topics.
