Preview Melquizael Costa Accepts Quick UFC Fight in Mexico City After Seattle Victory

Melquizael Costa quickly defeated Andre Fili on February 22nd, winning by submission with a guillotine choke. Shortly after this victory, he agreed to fight Christian Rodriguez at UFC Mexico just five weeks later.

Costa had long waits between his previous UFC fights, which was not his choice. He expressed his desire to fight more frequently after winning his recent UFC match. UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby responded immediately, offering him another fight right after his win in Seattle.

“After the fight, I told Dana White that if they needed me that week or next, to call me,” Costa mentioned. “I was joking, but they took it seriously. After medical checks, my coach said Sean Shelby called, asking if I wanted to fight on March 29th. My body was tired, but my mind said yes because of bills to pay. I didn’t think it would happen, but they gave us two opponent names, ‘CeeRod’ and Jamall Emmers, on the way to the hotel.”

Rodriguez has a record of five wins in seven UFC fights, recently winning against Austin Bashi in January. Emmers has a UFC record of 3-4, losing to Nate Landwehr by knockout in March 2024.

“A fight with Jamal Emmers might be easier, but less impactful,” Costa explained. “I just defeated someone who hadn`t been submitted in 10 years, a well-known fighter who has faced top opponents. Fighting Emmers, who is on a losing streak, wouldn`t be as valuable. ‘CeeRod’ is a better option. I like to challenge hyped fighters. He’s on a winning streak, has Mexican heritage, making this a very exciting fight.”

Costa returned to Brazil two days after his Seattle win and contacted his manager to confirm the March 29th fight. He immediately started training that night. Costa then traveled to Mexico City to prepare for the altitude, completing his training at the UFC Performance Institute in Mexico.

“We always prepare for what our opponents bring. We analyze them,” Costa stated. “I watch every UFC event and know ‘CeeRod’ since his fight with Raul Rosas Jr. He’s a young, hungry fighter on a roll, just like me. We both have a strong drive. I expect him to be fearless and ready for a fight.”
