Ukrainian world No. 36 Marta Kostyuk expressed her gratitude to the Madrid crowd for staying late to watch her fourth-round victory over Anastasia Potapova at the WTA 1000 tournament. Kostyuk secured her spot in the quarterfinals with a dominant 6-3, 6-2 win.
In her on-court interview, Kostyuk acknowledged the late hour, stating, “I`m very happy that the spectators stayed. I know it`s late. Thank you for staying.” She then added a humorous note about the difficulty of retaining a large audience for late matches unless the players are tennis icons, mentioning, “When you play late matches, it`s hard to keep the crowd, unless you are Rafa [Nadal], Roger [Federer], Novak [Djokovic], or Carlos [Alcaraz].”
Kostyuk`s next challenge in the Madrid quarterfinals will be against the world No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus.
