2014 US Open champion Marin Čilić recently discussed his views on the young tennis stars Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, offering his preference between the two.
Q: Sinner or Alcaraz?
A: Alcaraz.
Q: You didn`t even hesitate.
A: I simply like his style more. He is an aggressive, very athletic player, and his creativity is truly impressive.
Q: Are you concerned that he isn`t as consistent as some people expect?
A: Not at all. It boils down to his very creative game. Such aggressive players constantly aim for maximum speed; the sensation is akin to driving a Formula 1 car. They don`t necessarily have to win every single match, but it`s extremely difficult to maintain such a level of creativity at that kind of speed. For Carlos, this unique style is both a gift and, perhaps, a slight challenge at times.
Q: So, you could say there`s a price for that creativity.
A: When you watch his matches, it often feels like he has to invent something new in almost every point. He`s the complete opposite of a driver who always plays it safe and consistently finishes second or third. That kind of cautious approach knows when to ease off, which makes things simpler for them. But creative talents like Carlos are different. His game is spectacular, and personally, I have no worries about him whatsoever. He will develop exactly as he should.
