Lucia Bronzetti (world No. 59) secured her third victory of the season against a former or current world No. 1 player by defeating Naomi Osaka at the start of the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid with a score of 6/4, 2/6, 6/4.
Earlier this season (2024), the Italian player also achieved wins against Victoria Azarenka in the first round of the Australian Open and Simona Halep in the first round of the WTA 250 event in Cluj-Napoca.
Bronzetti now shares the top spot in the WTA Tour for this statistic. Mirra Andreeva and Jelena Ostapenko also have three such victories each this season. Both Andreeva and Ostapenko have two wins over Iga Swiatek and one over Aryna Sabalenka.
