According to his manager, Ali Abdelaziz, lightweight contender Justin Gaethje is contemplating retirement from mixed martial arts if he doesn`t receive the next shot at the division`s vacant title.
Gaethje secured a unanimous decision victory over Rafael Fiziev at UFC 313 in March. This win, combined with stepping in on short notice to face Fiziev after Dan Hooker withdrew, led Gaethje to believe he was next in line for a title opportunity. However, following Islam Makhachev`s decision to vacate the belt, the vacant lightweight championship fight was booked between Charles Oliveira and Ilia Topuria for UFC 317. This decision has reportedly left Gaethje feeling slighted.
Abdelaziz conveyed Gaethje`s stance during an appearance on Submission Radio. He stated, “Justin Gaethje fights the winner. He’s won three of his last four, he saved the UFC two times… He said, ‘If I’m not going to fight for the title, I’m just to hang up my gloves.’”
Known for his consistently thrilling performances, Gaethje has been a fan favorite since joining the UFC in 2017, earning numerous post-fight bonuses and participating in multiple “Fight of the Year” contests. Despite his impressive track record, his recent loss to Max Holloway for the BMF title at UFC 300 appears to have impacted his immediate title picture for UFC 317.
Abdelaziz elaborated on Gaethje`s feelings, describing him as a man of principle. He reported Gaethje saying, “I’m not going to get a title shot. I feel disrespected. I love being a UFC fighter, I love the UFC, but I feel the UFC has to love me back.”
Despite the current frustration, Abdelaziz expressed optimism, suggesting that he believes the UFC ultimately values Gaethje and will likely grant him the title shot he seeks, pending the outcome of the Oliveira vs. Topuria bout.
The championship fight between Charles Oliveira and Ilia Topuria is scheduled to headline UFC 317 on June 28 in Las Vegas.
