Preview Jon Anik Suggests Jon Jones Doesn’t Care About Potential Title Stripping

According to veteran UFC commentator Jon Anik, despite a growing online petition to strip Jon Jones of the UFC heavyweight title, Jones himself probably isn`t overly concerned. Jones even joked about the petition, endorsing it in jest by hoping it reached 200,000 signatures, seemingly showing his lack of genuine worry.

Anik addressed the petition during the UFC 316 pre-fight press conference. The petition has gained traction due to the ongoing delays in scheduling the highly anticipated clash between Jones and interim champion Tom Aspinall. The prolonged wait even led Aspinall to humorously congratulate Jones on retiring and declare himself the undisputed champion, although neither statement holds true.

Jones retains possession of the heavyweight belt and has frequently hinted at his imminent return to action. This continued presence and playful engagement with the situation lead Anik to believe that the fighter widely regarded as one of the greatest of all time isn`t losing sleep over calls from an online petition.

Anik commented, “I think a fight between Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall is bigger if they are both champions. I’m hopeful they’re going to fight in December in Las Vegas. I have no inside information.”

He further speculated on Jones`s mindset: “But I don’t know that Jon Jones really gives a rip if they strip him of the heavyweight championship. He’s still going to fight Tom, hopefully, and it’s still going to be a bag [of money].”

Anik`s perspective seems logical, especially considering Jones`s history of dismissing or even mocking suggestions that his title should be taken away.

Moreover, the scenario where Jones holds the undisputed title against an interim champion like Aspinall provides the UFC with a powerful narrative for promotion, potentially building the bout into one of the most significant heavyweight fights ever.

Regarding the fight`s timing, Jones recently stated he is bound by secrecy regarding the UFC`s plans for him and Aspinall, while Aspinall continues to express his hope for an announcement soon.

Given the UFC`s event scheduling extends into August and September, it appears improbable that Jones and Aspinall will face off before the final few months of 2024. However, several potential windows remain.

As Anik mentioned, the UFC often concludes the year with a major event in Las Vegas. Additionally, November typically features a pay-per-view card at Madison Square Garden in New York, the same venue where Jones defeated former heavyweight king Stipe Miocic last year.

While the exact date remains uncertain, UFC CEO Dana White has consistently promised that the fight between Jones and Aspinall is planned for sometime in 2025.
