World No. 1 Jannik Sinner discussed Novak Djokovic`s remarks regarding a potential end to his career following their French Open semifinal match, which Sinner won with a score of 6/4, 7/5, 7/6(3). Sinner also shared his perspective on the upcoming final clash against Carlos Alcaraz.
On Djokovic`s Possible Last Match at Roland Garros
When questioned about Djokovic`s statement suggesting their semifinal might have been his last match at Roland Garros and calling it a “wonderful farewell match,” Sinner expressed his hopes that this isn`t true. “First of all, I hope it`s not like that,” Sinner stated. “I think he is needed for tennis… As a person who is different from the young guys… It is nice for me to see him in the locker room and feel that energy.”
Sinner added, “I saw him practice a couple of days ago, and he is very precise in everything he does. He is a true example for all of us. If that`s the case [that it was his last match], I am happy that I was a part of such a match, because it is also a part of history. Let`s hope it`s not like that. He said `maybe`, so it is unknown what will happen next.”
On Facing Carlos Alcaraz in the Final
Regarding what he enjoys most about playing matches against Carlos Alcaraz, Sinner replied: “Sometimes it`s fun, and sometimes it`s not [smiling]. We try to show our best. I think when we play great, it is also enjoyable – not only for the spectators but also for us. This is a very, very special moment.”
Sinner highlighted the significance of their upcoming final: “A Grand Slam final against Carlos is a special moment for me as well as for him. He won here last year. We will see. Of course, the tension before the match and during the match is a bit different. We are both very young. Both different but talented. We will see.”
He concluded by emphasizing the need for preparedness: “As in any big rivalry, it is all based on tactical analysis of your capabilities, but you have to be prepared for the situation to change. You have to be prepared for everything,” Sinner said during the press conference.
