Islam Makhachev is set to move up to the welterweight division to challenge the newly crowned champion, Jack Della Maddalena. The specific date and location for this highly anticipated matchup are still being finalized.
Confirming the transition to the 170-pound weight class, UFC CEO Dana White announced that Makhachev will officially vacate his lightweight championship. This decision paves the way for Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliveira to compete for the vacant lightweight title at UFC 317, scheduled for June.
Makhachev`s opportunity to pursue a second divisional title was made possible following the results of UFC 315 this past weekend, where his close friend and frequent training partner, Belal Muhammad, suffered a defeat at the hands of Della Maddalena.
Previously, Makhachev had publicly stated he would not challenge for the welterweight title while Muhammad held the belt. However, Della Maddalena`s impressive unanimous decision victory over Muhammad altered this situation.
Immediately after securing the title, Della Maddalena expressed his strong interest in facing Makhachev. Now, his wish will be granted, with the fight expected to take place later this year.
Makhachev, currently ranked as the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the sport, is aiming to achieve the rare feat of becoming a simultaneous two-division champion.
Dana White confirmed that both fighters have verbally agreed to the bout. The remaining step is to determine the exact date and venue. Della Maddalena has already voiced a desire to host the fight in his native Australia.
