The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has officially confirmed the appointment of Gennaro Gattuso as the new head coach of the national team. The former midfielder, who was a key part of Italy`s 2006 FIFA World Cup winning squad, takes the helm ahead of the crucial qualifiers for the 2026 tournament.
Gattuso succeeds Luciano Spalletti, whose tenure concluded following a period of disappointing results. This included Italy`s elimination by Switzerland in the Round of 16 at UEFA Euro 2024 and a notable 3-0 defeat in a recent match preceding the qualifying campaign, prompting the federation to make a change.
Gattuso is set to be officially unveiled as the new head coach on June 19th in Rome. His initial matches in charge are scheduled for September, when Italy will face Estonia and Israel in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Throughout his coaching career, Gattuso has managed several prominent clubs. His past roles include leading teams like AC Milan, Napoli, Valencia, Marseille, and most recently, Hajduk Spalato in Croatia.
Speaking on the appointment, FIGC President Gabriele Gravina commented, `Gattuso embodies Italian football. His dedication, professional approach, and valuable experience will be vital for navigating the challenges ahead for the national team. Recognizing the significance of our objectives, I am grateful for his willingness and complete commitment in accepting this role…`
Luciano Spalletti had been appointed to guide the Azzurri in August 2023, taking over from Roberto Mancini. However, the team`s performances did not see the desired improvement, marked by losing three of their last four matches prior to the coaching change.
Reports had earlier linked former AS Roma coach Claudio Ranieri to the position, but he reportedly declined the opportunity. Following this, the FIGC explored other candidates, with Gattuso ultimately emerging as the preferred choice for the role.
