Preview Garry Accuses Prates of Quitting, Prates Fires Back

Ian Machado Garry is confident about his upcoming fight at UFC Kansas City, where he is set to face Carlos Prates. Garry, known as “The Future,” will headline the event on April 26 in a welterweight match against the rapidly rising contender Carlos Prates.

Prates has had a remarkable start in the UFC, winning his first four fights by knockout, each earning him a Performance of the Night bonus. He boasts an 11-fight winning streak as he prepares to challenge Garry, who is currently ranked No. 6.

However, Garry seems unimpressed by Prates` record. In a recent online video, Garry is seen analyzing one of Prates` previous defeats and labeling him a “quitter.”

“This video showcases Carlos Prates` true fighting spirit,” Garry stated sarcastically. “It’s called being a quitter.”

Garry elaborated, describing a fight where Prates, after allegedly being dominated in earlier rounds, gestured to indicate he was done and then collapsed in what Garry interpreted as despair, suggesting Prates lacks true fighter spirit.

The fight Garry is referencing is Prates` loss to Mikhail Romanchuk in January 2017 during an event in China. While Garry incorrectly mentions “rounds prior” as the fight was stopped just over two minutes into the first round, it`s true that Prates was on the defensive from the start. Romanchuk aggressively attacked Prates, leading to a TKO finish after a flurry of punches against the cage.

Since that loss, Prates has significantly improved, winning 14 of his subsequent 15 fights, with only one going to a decision. It`s worth noting that a majority of Prates` career losses have been first-round finishes. His recent victories include wins against seasoned fighters Neil Magny and Li Jingliang. The upcoming bout with Garry is a significant opportunity for Prates to break into the top 10 of the welterweight division.

Garry (15-1) is looking to bounce back from the first defeat of his professional career. He stepped in as a late replacement to fight Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310 last December, losing by unanimous decision in a three-round fight. Before that, Garry had won his first eight UFC matches.

Update: Prates has responded to Garry’s comments on Instagram, saying, “We’re training here, while Ian Garry is talking trash online. You have too much free time… On the 26th, I’ll punch him in the mouth… Asshole.”
