Retired mixed martial arts competitor and former Green Beret Tim Kennedy has issued a public statement apologizing for past inaccuracies regarding his military service record. The controversy arose following the resurfacing of a video interview where Kennedy claimed to have received the Bronze Star with Valor, an award he now admits was never bestowed upon him.
For years, Tim Kennedy has been a prominent figure known for both his combat sports career in organizations like the UFC and Strikeforce, and his distinguished service in the U.S. Army Special Forces. His public profile has often intertwined these two aspects of his life, portraying him as a tough and decorated veteran.
The catalyst for the recent apology was a video shared by retired Green Beret Nathan Cornacchia on his YouTube channel. The video highlighted an interview from 2017 in which Kennedy described an event from his time in service and explicitly stated he was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor as a result. This specific award signifies exceptional heroism in direct contact with an armed enemy – a distinction earned through acts risking life itself.
Following the video`s wider distribution and scrutiny, Kennedy took to Instagram to publish a lengthy apology. In his statement, the 45-year-old acknowledged making “unintentional misstatements” over the years concerning his military achievements. He specifically addressed the Bronze Star with Valor claim, calling it “not true” and stating there is “no excuse for it.” Kennedy expressed deep regret, emphasizing that he never received the honor and apologized to those who genuinely earned it, acknowledging his words “disrespected their service.”
Kennedy framed the misrepresentation as a consequence of being young and unprepared for the public eye when his profile grew, but accepted full responsibility, asserting that “Integrity is not situational.” He vowed to hold himself to a higher standard moving forward, promising this apology was a “beginning” and committing to rebuilding trust through “honest reflection, visible accountability, and ongoing service.” He stated he would cease speaking about his service in a manner that elevates him beyond his actual deeds, pledging future words would be guided by “truth, humility, and respect.”

Critics, including fellow former Green Beret Alex Theodosis, voiced skepticism regarding the sincerity and nature of the apology. Theodosis, commenting online, suggested Kennedy`s public persona and the claims made were far from “unintentional” but rather a deliberate construction aimed at achieving “fame and money.”
Theodosis pointed out that Kennedy had previous opportunities to correct the record but instead reinforced the false claims, even fabricating a story to support the lie. He critically labeled the apology as a “ChatGPT crafted non-apology,” implying it felt formulaic and insincere – less an admission of wrongdoing and more an expression of regret for being caught. According to Theodosis and others, merely glossing over one lie and promising future improvement is insufficient for the veteran and Special Forces communities who feel let down.
