Ahead of the crucial World Cup play-offs, a heated dispute has emerged between Wales and Bosnia and Herzegovina – potential final opponents for Italy – concerning an alleged incident involving Brondby's head coach Steeve Cooper and his midfielder Benjamin Tahirovic.

Italy is set to play Northern Ireland in their World Cup play-off semi-final in Bergamo on Thursday. The victor will then travel to face either Wales or Bosnia in a single-leg final to determine who qualifies for the prestigious tournament.

As semi-final preparations intensify, the Bosnian football federation has formally accused Brondby's Welsh head coach, Steve Cooper, of deliberately benching his player, Benjamin Tahirovic, to disrupt the midfielder's form ahead of the anticipated Wales vs. Bosnia play-off final in Cardiff.

Tahirovic, a regular starter for Brondby during the initial half of the 2025-26 season, has seen a drastic reduction in playing time, accumulating just 13 minutes across his team's last four fixtures leading up to the play-offs.

Bosnia's head coach, Sergej Barbarez, further escalated the situation, stating: "Tahirovic has shared information with me that is almost unbelievable, particularly concerning his coach's nationality."

Barbarez continued, implying the coach's motives: "He wished him good luck in all aspects, except for the national team. Tahirovic was allegedly assured that his situation would normalize after the international break."

However, Brondby's press officer, Soren Hanghoj, clarified the club's position, asserting that Tahirovic's exclusion was due to disciplinary issues and that the decision was a collective club action, not solely made by coach Cooper.

Reportedly, Tahirovic has since communicated with Cooper, explaining that his earlier comments were 'misunderstood.'
