Massimo Taibi Reflects on Memorable Career: 'I Often Hung Out with Beckham & Van Basten'

Massimo Taibi's professional football career began unexpectedly. In Palermo, a shortage of goalkeepers for a youth match led to the forward being asked to step in. He never returned to his outfield position.

This fortuitous turn of events initiated a career that saw him play for AC Milan, Manchester United, and various clubs in Serie A. Now 56, Taibi is applying his extensive experience as the sporting director at Pistoiese.

In a candid interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Taibi spoke fondly of the prominent figures he encountered throughout his playing days. Upon joining AC Milan, he recalls finding Ruud Gullit having coffee alone in the dining room on his first day. Marco van Basten, however, left an even deeper impression. "Marco was a gazelle," Taibi reminisced. "I often stayed with him after training. He possessed a unique elegance in everything he did."

His time at Manchester United, though brief, was perhaps the most remarkable chapter of his career. Sir Alex Ferguson personally collected him from the airport upon his arrival from Venezia in 1999, a gesture that immediately set a positive tone.

"They had initially intended to sign Toldo, but they bought me instead," Taibi stated. "Sir Alex himself met me at the airport and introduced me to the entire board at eight in the evening. That was a gesture not to be taken for granted."

David Beckham also proved to be an impressive figure up close. "I often stayed with him after training; he surprised me with his ball-striking, but above all, with his attitude," Taibi shared. "From the outside, he might seem like a tabloid personality, but in reality, he was the first to arrive and the last to leave."

His departure from Old Trafford remains his greatest regret. Despite Ferguson's encouragement to stay, learn the language, and compete for his place, a personal family matter in Italy prompted a swift exit.

"I had four years left on my contract," he recalled. "Ferguson told me to stay and play my cards. I was wrong to be impulsive." Reflecting with a smile, he notes that many people now remember him for a headed goal he scored for Reggina, rather than any mistakes, a legacy he finds satisfactory.
