Italy's head coach, Gennaro Gattuso, has revealed his rationale behind selecting Bergamo as the venue for the upcoming World Cup play-off semi-final against Northern Ireland, strategically opting for the smaller arena over the iconic San Siro. Gattuso expressed his gratitude to FIGC President Gabriele Gravina and Delegation Chief Gigi Buffon for granting him the autonomy to make this crucial decision.

The pivotal match is scheduled for Thursday, March 26, and will take place at Atalanta's New Balance Arena, a stadium with a capacity of 25,000 seats. This venue previously hosted Gattuso's inaugural match as Italy's coach against Estonia last September.

Why Bergamo Was Preferred Over San Siro

During a recent press conference, Gattuso articulated his preference, explaining his belief that larger stadiums like San Siro, with its 60,000-seat capacity, are often populated by fans from rival clubs like Inter and Milan. He noted that such fans "might start booing after a few wrong passes," potentially creating a negative environment. In contrast, he expects a smaller stadium to generate a significantly "better atmosphere."

Gattuso recounted a specific instance from his first game in charge against Estonia, where fans expressed their displeasure despite the team achieving a 0-0 draw by halftime. He aims to cultivate a more unified and passionate home crowd in Bergamo, stating, "We hope to create a real cauldron-like atmosphere and that we haven’t messed things up."

For Gattuso, the focus remains squarely on the immediate challenge. "Thursday’s game is the only target. All the rest is the past, and I think we have a great chance," he affirmed, emphasizing the team's determination to secure their qualification.
