Di Canio Criticizes Rafael Leao: Milan Perform Better Without Him

Paolo Di Canio has reignited his strong critique of Rafael Leao, asserting that AC Milan exhibits superior performance in the absence of the Portuguese forward.

Leao is currently navigating a challenging period marked by inconsistent displays, injury concerns, and alleged internal squad tensions, including a recent disagreement with Christian Pulisic. Persistent rumors surrounding his contract status have further intensified uncertainty about his future at the club.

Speaking at the Legends Trophy event, Di Canio, whose remarks were reported by Corriere della Sera, highlighted Milan's enhanced goal output when Leao is not on the pitch.

“Without him, Milan score more goals and appear more solid: 21 goals in eight matches without Leao,” he stated. “Will he get angry? I don't care. He's not my brother or cousin. I have nothing against him.”

Di Canio Questions Leao's Overall Contribution at Milan

The former Italy international also questioned Leao's overall offensive contribution beyond just scoring, suggesting that the nature of Serie A defending often plays to the winger's advantage.

“He scores more by playing less as a striker because in Italy it's easier. Defenses aren't that strong, so he can always find a moment. The issue is what you produce during the match beyond the goal.”

Di Canio maintained that his comments were not personal attacks but were intended to elevate standards within a Milan squad striving for the Scudetto.

“If I had a lazy player scoring three goals per game, perhaps I'd accept it. But Milan cannot afford that if they aim to build solidity, not just on the pitch but in their overall attitude. I'm not saying they should sell him; perhaps he'll turn things around, and I'll be the first to admit I was wrong.”
