The countdown has officially begun. With just one year remaining until the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off, anticipation is building across North America. Countdown clocks have been unveiled in the 16 host cities. The opening match is set to take place at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on June 11, 2026. This historic venue will become the first stadium ever to host three World Cup opening matches.
While this edition marks the third time the World Cup won`t feature matches in all host nations` capital cities (Washington D.C. and Ottawa were not selected), there`s still plenty to celebrate. The tournament coincides with the 250th anniversary of the United States, adding a layer of historical significance, particularly for a former capital like Philadelphia, which is a host city.
Philadelphia is also serving as a host city for the FIFA Club World Cup, which provides a crucial trial run for the larger tournament. However, the city is no stranger to managing major global events, having previously hosted the 2016 Copa America Centenario and the World Meeting of Families with Pope Francis in 2015.
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker expressed the city`s readiness: “We are prepared and the eyes of the world will be on our great city as the FIFA World Cup matches officially begin. This is more than just a sporting event; it is a transformative moment that embodies everything that we’re working toward here in the city of Philadelphia, and that’s a safer, greener Philadelphia with opportunity for all, and it’s going to be amazing to have the world see it.”
Thirteen teams have already secured their spot in the expanded 48-team tournament, with 35 more places still up for grabs. This will be the first World Cup hosted by the United States since 1994. That tournament holds the record for the highest attendance in World Cup history, a record that is widely expected to be surpassed in 2026. The event is a momentous occasion for the entire continent, with matches held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. For Philadelphia, being a host city offers a prime opportunity to showcase itself on the global stage.
Meg Kane, the host city executive and CEO of Philadelphia Soccer 2026, highlighted the unique cultural exchange the tournament will bring: “What I think has been really interesting is the conversations with supporters and partners is the excitement around the fans who will be coming from other countries, and what I like to say is learning how [they experience fandom].” She noted the contrast between local Philadelphia sports culture, like the `Go Birds` mentality of Eagles fans, and the global celebration style of World Cup fans, adding that there`s significant interest not just in observing but potentially joining in this diverse fan experience.
The World Cup truly is an unparalleled event, bringing together fans from every corner of the globe in a vibrant celebration of football.
