Former world number one Evgeny Kafelnikov has commented on the recent poor performances of Russian tennis players Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev at the start of the season. At the Miami Masters, both players were defeated in the second round.
“Rublev showed some flashes of brilliance, but Medvedev showed none at all. Despite reaching the semi-finals in Indian Wells, Daniil didn`t really show his game. This is a consequence of something being wrong with their training process. Rublev and Medvedev`s time is passing. To return to their previous level, each of them needs to train three times more than they did a year ago. Relying on past achievements won`t just prevent them from achieving previous results, but they won`t even maintain their current positions. Unfortunately, this is the reality these guys are facing.
They are no longer young, and they are not seen as promising talents anymore. Medvedev and Rublev are approaching veteran status. If you want to compete, you need to work three times harder than before. It seems to me that neither Daniil nor Andrey has this desire. I`d be happy to be wrong, but that`s how I see it,” – Kafelnikov stated, as reported by `Championship`.
