Dustin Poirier is already thinking about life after his fighting career concludes.
He`s expected to step into the octagon for the last time this month, facing Max Holloway for the BMF title at UFC 318. The event, specifically brought to New Orleans for “The Diamond,” marks his anticipated retirement, a moment he says brings up many emotions.
Reflecting on this transition, Poirier confessed feeling “scared” and that it`s “bittersweet.” Having dedicated most of his life to the sport, he acknowledges leaving opportunities and finances behind. However, he questions his motivation: aiming for a fourth title shot seems challenging, requiring a win streak he`s unsure he can achieve. Despite feeling he still performs well (citing his recent fight with Islam Makhachev), he believes “it`s just time.” Family is a key factor; he`s a father and wants to expand his family and pursue interests outside fighting. He states he doesn`t want to continue fighting solely for the money if a championship goal isn`t realistic.
Retirement isn`t all somber reflection, though. Poirier lightheartedly revealed a post-fighting goal: bulking up. “This will be the last time I’m ever 155 pounds in my life,” he joked, adding, “Listen, I’m getting on steroids. Once USADA stops knocking on my door, and I lay the gloves down, I’m getting jacked and tan.” He insisted to his wife that he`s serious about this plan.
This humorous embrace of hypothetical performance enhancement post-competition echoes comments from other fighters. Beyond physique goals, Poirier plans to remain connected to MMA.
He expressed deep love for the sport, watching fights across various promotions. Poirier hopes to stay involved, perhaps through broadcasting to remain a voice in the community that shaped his life. While opening a gym isn`t his plan, he`s passionate about helping others navigate the fighter`s journey, offering support at gyms and assisting local fighters. He sees fighting as a transformative “vehicle” and wants to help others benefit similarly.
