Melquizael Costa`s recent decision victory against Julian Erosa is made even more remarkable considering a severe injury he sustained during the bout.
Competing at UFC Vegas 106 on Saturday at the UFC APEX, the 28-year-old fighter secured his latest win, extending his impressive streak to four consecutive victories. While the performance itself was notable, the win came at a significant cost.
Following the event, UFC CEO Dana White took to his Instagram stories to share graphic footage and images. These revealed a nasty gash on Costa`s toe. What initially appeared to be a deep cut was shown to be far more severe when the person attending to the injury carefully revealed the extent of the wound, exposing the underlying tissue.
White`s posts included still shots highlighting the severity of the damage sustained by the fighter`s toe.
Fortunately, White also provided an update, confirming that Costa`s toe required stitches to close the serious wound.
Nicknamed “Melk Cauthy,” Costa is quickly establishing himself as a force in the deeply competitive featherweight division. His recent triumph over Erosa is his third win within a rapid 85-day span. This successful run includes a decision victory over Christian Rodriguez at UFC Mexico, preceded by back-to-back submission wins against veteran fighters Andre Fili and Shayilan Nuerdanbieke.
Costa currently holds a professional record of 5-2 within the octagon. His only two losses in the promotion were to Steve Garcia and Thiago Moises, the latter occurring during his short-notice UFC debut.
