World number 11 Daniil Medvedev recently discussed his reaction to Casper Ruud`s victory at the Madrid Masters. Medvedev had previously lost to the Norwegian in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Medvedev commented that while losing to the eventual champion used to make defeats easier to accept when he was younger, at the quarter-final stage, the identity of the opponent (whether it was Ruud, Jack Draper, or Lorenzo Musetti) is less significant, as they are all strong clay-court players. He expressed satisfaction with his own performance against Ruud, noting he was close to taking the second set to a tie-break. He praised Ruud`s subsequent play in the semi-finals and final, stating that Ruud “proved he can do it” by winning his first Masters title. Medvedev added that he was happy for Ruud and intends to perform better in Rome.
Regarding his highly attacking tactical approach against Ruud in Madrid, Medvedev clarified that this was specific to the conditions in Madrid and the matchup against Ruud. He explained that he doesn`t see himself winning long rallies against Ruud, who typically tries to dictate play. Therefore, his strategy was to be the one dictating the points. While it worked to an extent, Ruud`s strong defense and counter-attacking abilities were notable. Medvedev indicated that this style was tailored to the specific circumstances in Madrid and against Ruud, and he will adapt his game in Rome, where conditions are slower, depending on his opponent.
Medvedev holds the Rome Masters in a special, and somewhat unexpected, place in his career. He described his 2023 victory there as surprising for several reasons, primarily because he “used to genuinely hate clay” but now finds himself liking it much more and being calmer about playing on the surface. He also noted that the Rome title was his *last* trophy won, making the Italian Open the most special place for him over the past two years. He stated his intention to try and repeat his success this year.
When asked about the most challenging aspect of Rome, Medvedev humorously pointed to the roads and the driving. He finds it impossible to imagine driving a sports car there without damaging it due to the chaotic traffic, pedestrians, and rough road surfaces. He also finds the local driving style difficult. Conversely, he sees many positive aspects of Rome, but if forced to choose one, it would be the food, which he finds delicious. He also appreciates the sights, the city center, and the pleasant people.
On the topic of favorite foods in Rome, Medvedev mentioned his fondness for desserts and pasta in general. While not having one specific favorite dish, he would choose veal scaloppini in lemon sauce as a main course, and any dessert.
