UFC CEO Dana White asserts that FBI Director Kash Patel`s suggestion of a potential collaboration between the UFC and the federal law enforcement agency is not controversial and is, in fact, entirely logical.
In February, Patel initially brought up the idea of having UFC athletes train agents during a meeting with FBI field office leaders nationwide. Although the concept faced some initial doubt, White later confirmed that Patel was genuinely serious about establishing a partnership aimed at equipping agents with enhanced practical skills.
Patel, known to be a big fan who recently attended UFC 314 in Miami, has discussed this potential partnership with White. The UFC head is convinced that such a collaboration would significantly benefit agents operating in the field.
Speaking to Fox News, White explained, “It`s important for people to know that UFC fighters have been training law enforcement and military personnel for a long time. When you consider hand-to-hand combat, these individuals absolutely need to be skilled in jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, and the other fundamental elements of mixed martial arts.”
He added, “Everyone tries to find controversy, but there`s nothing controversial here. All law enforcement personnel should receive training in [MMA], maintain physical fitness, and be capable of defending themselves. Kash Patel was completely serious when he proposed this, and we have discussed it.”
While a formal agreement has not yet been finalized, White appears optimistic about the partnership`s future, stating that the UFC is eager to assist the FBI in any capacity.
White`s assertion about the history of fighters and coaches collaborating with local police departments globally is accurate. For instance, renowned coach Greg Jackson operated a long-running program in New Mexico specifically for law enforcement and SWAT team members.
Furthermore, John McCarthy, widely regarded as one of the most famous referees in MMA history, also served as a tactics and self-defense instructor for the Los Angeles Police Department.
Looking ahead, the UFC CEO is confident that this partnership would prove highly valuable for agents seeking to enhance their skillset with additional defensive techniques.
White concluded by emphasizing, “Individuals in these roles, any form of law enforcement, should possess the ability to defend themselves effectively even in situations where firearms cannot be used.”
