Conor McGregor himself is the reason for the latest delay in his anticipated return to the octagon.
Nearly four years have passed since fight enthusiasts last witnessed McGregor compete. His last appearance was at UFC 264 in July 2021, a fight that concluded with a leg injury and his second defeat to Dustin Poirier. As of now, McGregor is still awaiting confirmation for his next fight, all while managing his responsibilities as a co-owner of BKFC and exploring a potential presidential candidacy in his homeland, Ireland.
Following a BKFC 70 event in Florida, McGregor addressed the media about his UFC contract situation and the timeline for his possible return to fighting.
“As I mentioned, I have two fights remaining on my contract and negotiations are underway,” McGregor stated. “Recently, I had an experience that deeply affected me. Visiting the White House made me realize the deep concern I have for my country and the issues it faces. There are significant matters happening back home in Ireland.”
“I am content with my accomplishments. However, I feel a pull towards something different right now, and that`s where my focus is heading. We will see what happens. Greatness should not be rushed. There was a recent opportunity, or rather an offer, to fight in Alcatraz. An event is planned in Alcatraz in June, I believe. They approached me, but the offer didn`t reflect my value. As a fighter, it`s crucial to know your worth. I hold every pay-per-view and gate record. My comeback is set to be the biggest and most anticipated in history. At this moment, Ireland is at the forefront of my thoughts. It will happen eventually, I`m sure, and it`s always great to be here.”
McGregor did not specify which organization proposed the Alcatraz Island fight, referring to the infamous former prison that is now a tourist site in San Francisco.
Regarding his White House visit, McGregor made headlines on March 17 when he met with former President Donald Trump in the United States. McGregor, a known admirer of Trump, used the opportunity to praise Trump’s work ethic. This visit aligns with McGregor`s emerging political ambitions, as he later announced his intentions to run for President of Ireland, a largely symbolic role where the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) holds the primary executive power.
Recently, McGregor has been vocal on social media, criticizing the Irish government, particularly regarding immigration policies. While he has expressed a desire to bring about change in Ireland, he also acknowledges the element of spectacle in his presidential aspirations.
“`And entering the octagon, the notorious President of Ireland, Conor McGregor,`” McGregor mused when questioned about juggling fighting and presidential duties. “Absolutely, why wouldn`t I? That’s part of the appeal. Imagine being announced as the President of Ireland before a fight. Of course, I’m in.”
It remains uncertain whether McGregor has officially filed the paperwork for a presidential campaign. Despite his fame in combat sports, his political aspirations could be complicated by his past controversies. He was recently found liable in a civil sexual assault case from 2018 in Dublin and is facing another civil suit related to alleged sexual assault from 2023 in Miami.
Concerning potential opponents for McGregor`s return to fighting, BKFC fighter Mike Perry was mentioned at the press conference. McGregor seemed open to a fight with Perry, acknowledging their history.
