World No. 4 Coco Gauff commented on her victory over Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinals of the Madrid tournament, winning 7-5, 6-1.
“I`m happy that I won, satisfied with my performance. The first set wasn`t easy, it was a nervous battle. Andreeva is a talented young tennis player, and I`m sure many more exciting matches await us,” the WTA press service quoted Gauff as saying.
The American also spoke about the turning point in the match against Andreeva.
Q: What changed in the match after being down 4-5 and 15-40, when you saved two set points and then won eight consecutive games?
A: I didn`t change anything at all during the match. I had break points before; if I had used one earlier, maybe I would have been serving for the set myself at that score.
Yes, she started making more errors, but I continued doing the exact same thing. It was just that more rallies started going the way I needed them to. I didn`t change anything because I was doing a lot right initially, it was just that Mirra was hitting aces and great drop shots,” Gauff said at the press conference.
