Oliveira emphasized that his focus is on competing for the championship belt. He believes there`s no benefit in fighting opponents ranked below him and is only interested in facing top contenders. He recognizes Pimblett as a promising and skilled fighter, but it`s not the right fight for Oliveira at this stage of his career. Oliveira understands that fighters lower in the rankings often call out higher-ranked opponents to gain attention and climb the ranks, a tactic he himself used in the past to secure fights with top-5 contenders. While a fight with Pimblett could be exciting, it doesn`t align with Oliveira`s current goals.
The lightweight division`s title picture is somewhat unclear. Current champion Islam Makhachev is seemingly waiting to see the outcome of a welterweight bout to potentially pursue a second title. Ilia Topuria has also entered the lightweight title conversation after moving up from featherweight.
Oliveira initially had two main options in mind: a title fight against Makhachev or a “BMF” title fight with Max Holloway. However, he now presents a condition for considering a fight with Topuria.
Oliveira reiterated his primary goal is to reclaim the lightweight belt. He had considered the “BMF” fight because he anticipated Makhachev would be unavailable until October. When Makhachev indicated his desire to fight sooner, Oliveira shifted his focus away from Holloway. Now, the situation is less clear.
While his priority is the title, Oliveira asserts he is willing to fight anyone and has never avoided challenges. He respects all potential opponents but is confident in imposing his fighting style. He is open to fighting Topuria, especially if it`s for the title. Oliveira wants to move directly towards a title shot and is not interested in taking another fight just to wait for a title opportunity.
