Chael Sonnen is intrigued by the idea of Conor McGregor pursuing a political career.

Recently, “The Notorious” Conor McGregor announced his intention to run for President of Ireland, a role that is largely symbolic. Despite this, McGregor has been outspoken about his desire to challenge the current government and has promised significant changes if elected.

In a YouTube reaction video, Sonnen discussed McGregor`s reasoning and stated that if he were an Irish citizen eligible to vote, he would support McGregor.

Sonnen questioned McGregor`s political ambitions and electability in Ireland, saying, “There are aspects of Conor that I would definitely vote for, but many people in Ireland do not like him. One of the first things he did was purchase property abroad. It`s a common mistake for public figures to promote patriotism while showcasing a lavish lifestyle elsewhere.”

“So, I`m not sure if Conor could win, and it`s not really my place to say as I can`t vote. However, if I could, I would actually vote for him,” Sonnen admitted.

McGregor, a former two-division UFC champion and a major figure in combat sports, is considering politics during a break from competition. The 36-year-old last fought at UFC 264 in July 2021, suffering a leg injury in a loss to Dustin Poirier. Since then, McGregor has been inactive, focusing on injury rehabilitation, other ventures, and resolving legal issues.

His planned return at UFC 303 against Michael Chandler in June was cancelled due to a toe injury. Sonnen has previously doubted McGregor`s return to fighting and is uncertain whether politics or an MMA comeback is more likely.

Sonnen commented, “Conor McGregor running for president of Ireland and Conor McGregor returning to the UFC are both extraordinary claims without much evidence. No one is really confirming these ideas. But does that mean they are impossible? Or is one more plausible than the other?”

“The idea of Conor entering politics, despite lacking experience, isn`t necessarily a disadvantage,” Sonnen argued. “Many politicians are politically inexperienced. People often criticize politicians for being out of touch, but that doesn`t always hinder them. A good image and the ability to communicate a message can be more effective than deep political expertise.”

Sonnen also wondered if McGregor`s political aspirations are linked to his reluctance to return to the octagon or the UFC`s difficulties in negotiating with him. Sonnen believes specific conditions are needed for McGregor to fight again.

Sonnen stated, “I don`t believe Conor has the drive to endure the intense preparation for a fight, especially a 25-minute main event. It`s incredibly demanding. If the UFC is struggling to understand why McGregor won`t sign, they could consider shortening the fight to three five-minute rounds, which might significantly increase the chances of him agreeing.”

“The UFC couldn`t persuade Khabib to return for his 30th fight, not due to financial reasons, but likely because of the 155-pound weight class. Offering a 170-pound fight might have changed his decision. Numbers matter. For Conor, considering president and fighter – which path is less probable?” Sonnen concluded.
