
Eight individuals suffered minor injuries when a vehicle drove into spectators gathered outside the stadium during the Barcelona versus Espanyol football match on Thursday. Authorities have confirmed the incident was an accident and not intentional.
The event unfolded during the initial minutes of the game at Barcelona`s RCDE Stadium. Some fans inside the stadium, witnessing the incident, attempted to get the attention of match officials to halt the game. Efforts included shouting towards Espanyol`s goalkeeper, Joan Garcia, and some individuals briefly entering the pitch area to alert him, which resulted in a temporary stop to play. These individuals were later escorted out by security personnel.
Early reports indicated that all injuries sustained were minor. Salvador Ilia, the president of the government of Catalonia, reiterated that the incident was not an intentional act.
Statements from local police assured the public that there was no danger to anyone within RCDE Stadium, a message also conveyed through announcements inside the venue.
Despite the incident, the match continued, with Barcelona securing a 2-0 victory. Lamine Yamal scored the winning goal, a result that officially crowned Barcelona as La Liga champions.
