With Alex Ovechkin just one goal away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky`s legendary all-time record, the demand to see history unfold live is immense. Fans hoping to attend Sunday`s game against the New York Islanders at UBS Arena will face significantly higher ticket costs.
Ovechkin matched Gretzky`s record on Friday night with his 894th career goal, making his next goal a potential record-breaker. The Washington Capitals` upcoming game against the Islanders has caused ticket prices to dramatically increase in recent days.
According to TickPick, the lowest available ticket price for the Capitals versus Islanders game is now a staggering $600. This price will only get you the highest, least desirable seats in UBS Arena. However, those who planned ahead could have secured much cheaper tickets.
Earlier this season, the cheapest ticket for this game was just $48. Even as recently as Thursday, the lowest price was $163. While still expensive, this was over $400 less than the current entry price.
These elevated prices might be justified if Ovechkin scores his record-breaking goal on Sunday. However, there`s no guarantee of that. Despite having scored 44 goals against the Islanders throughout his career, Ovechkin has never managed to score against Ilya Sorokin, who is expected to be the Islanders` goalie for the game.
Even if the Islanders` net is empty at the end of the game, Ovechkin has stated he doesn`t want to break Gretzky`s record with an empty-net goal.
