Washington Capitals defenseman Alexander Alexeyev was reportedly pepper-sprayed and arrested on Saturday. He faces a charge of public intoxication in connection with an alleged fight outside a bar in the Clarendon area of Arlington, Virginia, according to a report by ARLnow.

Kiyah Daniell, a spokesperson for the Arlington County Police Department, informed ARLnow that police were alerted by a witness at 3:26 a.m. who observed an altercation between two men outside Big Tony`s Pizza located on the 3100 block of Clarendon Blvd.

Upon their arrival, officers observed Alexeyev reportedly assaulting the other individual, which led police to deploy pepper spray on the Capitals defenseman.

“Officers then saw the male suspect physically fighting with the male subject,” Daniell stated. “As officers approached, the suspect assaulted the subject, and an officer used pepper spray while taking him into custody. Medics treated the suspect at the scene for exposure to pepper spray.”

Alexeyev was booked into the Arlington County jail at 4:19 a.m. on Saturday and has since been released.

The 25-year-old Alexeyev was a first-round draft pick by Washington in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. He debuted in the NHL in 2021 and has appeared in 80 games for the Capitals.

Last season, Alexeyev played in eight games without scoring any points, but he participated in all 10 of the Capitals` playoff contests. His current contract with the team ends this summer, making him eligible to become a restricted free agent.
