Cain Velasquez has learned his punishment, which is less severe than what prosecutors were seeking.
The former UFC heavyweight champion was given a five-year prison sentence on Monday. This followed his no-contest plea in court this past April to several charges. These charges included attempted murder, felony assault, and other gun-related charges from his arrest in 2022.
The charges arose from an incident in February 2022. Velasquez pursued a vehicle in a high-speed chase. The vehicle contained Harry Goularte, who was accused of molesting Velasquez`s son at a daycare owned by Goularte`s mother. During the chase, Velasquez fired shots from a .40 caliber handgun at the vehicle. One of the shots hit Goularte’s stepfather, Paul Bender, in the arm, causing non-life-threatening injuries. Prosecutors in California had requested a sentence of 30 years to life in prison for Velasquez.
Velasquez will receive credit for the time he has already served in custody.
