Cain Velasquez expressed remorse for his actions in court on Monday before being sentenced to five years in prison. This sentence follows his no-contest plea to attempted murder charges.
The former UFC heavyweight champion, arrested in February 2022, addressed the court prior to Judge Arthur Bocanegra`s sentencing. Velasquez faced multiple felony charges after a high-speed chase where he shot at a vehicle carrying Harry Goularte, the man accused of sexually abusing Velasquez`s young son at his mother`s daycare.
During the incident, a bullet struck Goularte`s stepfather, Paul Bender, causing non-life-threatening injuries. Velasquez was arrested afterwards without resistance. In his statement to the court, Velasquez apologized for his behavior.
“I am truly sorry,” Velasquez stated, according to reports. “My actions were irresponsible and extremely dangerous. I am ashamed and regretful of my conduct on the day of the crime.”
He added, “I hope for healing for my family and the Goularte family, and for the community.”
Prosecutors had sought a sentence of 30 years to life, while Velasquez`s lawyers requested time served and probation.
Judge Bocanegra opted for a lesser punishment, acknowledging both Velasquez`s accountability for his crime and the victimization of his family due to the alleged child molestation case.
While the sentence is five years, Velasquez will receive credit for 1,283 days already served, including jail time and house arrest.
It is anticipated that Velasquez will serve less than two years in prison, potentially even less with good behavior.
Velasquez, supported by family and friends in court, was granted a moment with his wife and children before being taken into custody to begin his sentence.
