Ben Askren is uncertain about Sean O’Malley’s chances against Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 316, and he wonders if taking this rematch now is the right move for O’Malley.
Dvalishvili defeated O’Malley by unanimous decision at UFC 306 in September to win the title. They are now scheduled for a rematch on June 7 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Askren believes it might have been better for O’Malley to face a different opponent with a different fighting style before going up against Dvalishvili again, especially considering Dvalishvili`s current winning streak.
During a discussion on the “Funky & The Champ” podcast with Daniel Cormier, Askren expressed his concerns, stating, “I kind of think this is a bad move. If Merab defeats him again, O’Malley`s appeal could significantly diminish. People might think, `He`s already lost to the champion twice, why would he get another title shot until the champion is no longer there?`”
Askren suggested, “O’Malley could have fought some lower-ranked fighters, particularly those who aren`t strong wrestlers. Against such opponents, he could really shine as a superstar. He has an exciting and diverse striking game, and he could have looked impressive, rebuilding anticipation for bigger fights. But now, the general feeling might be, `We just saw this fight, it wasn`t close, why are we watching it again?`”
O’Malley has mentioned making significant life changes since his loss to Dvalishvili, including taking a break from social media. He believes he is in a much better state, both physically and mentally, as he prepares for his fourth UFC championship fight.
Dvalishvili`s pressure and wrestling were key to his success in their first fight. Askren thinks O’Malley might have benefited from spending more time focusing on improving his wrestling skills.
“I wish Sean would’ve taken some more time to improve his wrestling, but he has dynamic striking, he has knockout capabilities,” Askren acknowledged. “However, Merab has looked almost unbeatable in his recent fights.”
