In the rigorous world of simultaneous chess exhibitions, a unique format known as the “clock simul” presents a distinct challenge. Unlike a traditional simul where the master controls the pace, a clock simul equips each participant with their own clock. This means opponents can make their moves and initiate the clock at any time, placing immense pressure on the simul player to navigate multiple boards rapidly and efficiently manage their limited time.
Recently, Belgian Grandmaster Daniel Dardha took on this formidable test, facing a total of 50 opponents in the concert hall De Brielpoort located in Deinze. His performance was exceptional. Dardha secured victory in 40 games, drew seven, and suffered only three losses. This resulted in a final score of 43.5 points out of a possible 50, translating to an impressive 87% success rate against players holding a respectable average Elo rating of 1834.
This outstanding result reportedly surpasses the previous world record for a clock simul. The prior benchmark was held by Dutch Grandmaster Sipke Ernst, who in November 2022 played against 47 opponents and achieved a score of 35 points, representing a 74% success rate. Dardha`s achievement stands out by involving a larger number of opponents while simultaneously reaching a significantly higher percentage score.
While the accomplishment is noteworthy and has garnered significant attention, it is important to state that the record has not yet received official confirmation. The necessary application and documentation have been formally submitted by the Belgian Chess Federation to the relevant authorities for ratification. The chess community now awaits official verification of this remarkable feat of endurance, speed, and tactical precision under pressure.
