Preview Alex Perez vs. Steve Erceg Set for UFC Vegas 109

Alex Perez and Steve Erceg, two contenders in the flyweight division, are both urgently seeking a victory to regain momentum.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) officially announced the booking on Sunday, confirming that these seasoned flyweights will face off at UFC Vegas 109, scheduled for August 9. The event`s headliner has also been confirmed as a middleweight bout between Roman Dolidze and Anthony Hernandez.

Despite holding positions within the top 15 of the MMA Fighting Global Rankings – with Perez ranked at number 10 and Erceg at number 12 – both fighters, who have previously competed for a championship, are currently struggling to find their previous winning form.

Alex Perez (with a record of 25 wins and 9 losses) has endured a difficult period, securing only a single win in his last five appearances. He managed to break a three-fight losing streak (a run that included a defeat to then-flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC 255) by achieving a knockout victory over Matheus Nicolau. However, his most recent fight in June 2024 against Tatsura Taira resulted in another loss, attributed to a knee injury.

Steve Erceg (holding a record of 12 wins and 4 losses) is also currently experiencing a losing streak, which began following his title opportunity. The Australian standout lost a competitive decision to current champion Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 301. Since that championship bout, he has subsequently dropped his following two contests against Kai Kara-France and Brandon Moreno.
