Ovechkin needs just six more goals to pass Gretzky`s record of 894. He didn`t score in the following game against the Wild.
Hockey fans are wondering if Ovechkin will break the record before the end of this season. Statistics from SportsLine suggest there is a 62% chance he will do it this season.
SportsLine predicts Ovechkin is likely to break the record between April 12th and 17th. They estimate about an 11% chance on April 12th against the Columbus Blue Jackets, slightly higher on April 13th against the same team, and the highest chance on April 15th against the Islanders at around 15%.
Ovechkin has scored three goals in his last six games, scoring in every other game. He has scored six goals in March so far.
This season, Ovechkin has 36 goals and 24 assists and is aiming for his third 40-goal season in the last four years.
The Capitals are also competing for the Presidents` Trophy, awarded to the league`s best team. As Washington aims for the top spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs, Ovechkin will have many chances to score in the remaining weeks of the season.
