Did the recent Olympics turn you into a devoted hockey enthusiast, yet you’re still figuring out the NHL beyond international teams? Perhaps “Rivals” on Movistar+ piqued your interest in the NHL, leaving you wondering how to start following it? Fret not, NHLmania is here to assist!
We offer both a comprehensive dictionary and a detailed guide to resolve any queries (except, perhaps, “What constitutes goalie interference?”—even the referees debate that one!). Furthermore, we’ve gathered an incredible squad of fans (akin to Marvel’s Avengers) to introduce you to each team, simplifying your entry into the league. Be aware that these insights come directly from fans, so expect a healthy dose of bias!
Today, we’re spotlighting the teams of the Central Division, one of the NHL’s four major divisions. For those curious about other divisions, you’ll find their introductions in our linked articles.
Chicago Blackhawks – Chicago, Illinois, United States
Name: Marcos López
- How did you become a fan of this team?
I began following hockey via Canal Plus and Sportmania in the late 90s, but I hadn’t settled on a team. That changed after watching “Detective with Silken Stockings,” a film set in Chicago involving the murder of a former Blackhawks player. The team’s logos, prominently featured, resonated with me, and I knew I’d found my team.
- Could you briefly tell us something about the team’s history?
The Blackhawks are one of the ‘Original Six’ founding members of the NHL, established in 1926. Founder Frederic McLaughlin, a WWI veteran, named the team after his military division, which itself honored a Native American warrior chief. After winning championships in 1934 and 1938, the team frequently finished last in the 1940s and 50s. The late 90s and early 2000s were challenging, but under Rocky Wirtz’s leadership, the Blackhawks built a formidable dynasty that dominated the NHL in the 2010s.
- What’s a curious fact new fans should know? For example, about players, the city, fans, rivalries, the mascot…
The pre-game performance of the U.S. national anthem is an electrifying moment; sung, applauded, and cheered throughout, it injects immense energy into both the crowd and the players. Opera singer Jim Cornelison’s powerful voice is famously the spark that ignites the United Center before every match.
- Which star player should they pay attention to?
The Blackhawks’ current project revolves around the immense talent of Connor Bedard. The 2005-born, 2023 first overall draft pick is widely considered a generational talent capable of leaving a significant mark on the NHL. His raw skill is undeniable; the franchise’s challenge now is to nurture his development and surround him with a strong core of supporting players.
- In summary, why should someone become a fan of your team?
Join the Blackhawks fandom because they’re a founding member of the league, boast arguably the most iconic logo and jerseys – especially with the return of black this season – and are poised to add more Stanley Cups to their collection soon.

Colorado Avalanche – Denver, Colorado, United States
I got sidetracked and ended up interviewing two different fans for the Avalanche. Here are their answers.
- Name: Pedro (@Peter_Cervezas on X)
- How did you become a fan of this team?
Like many from my generation, I became a fan through video games, specifically NHL 2000 on PlayStation. Ice hockey had always fascinated me, so it was one of my first game purchases. Through it, I learned the NHL’s rules and teams, and the Colorado Avalanche, featuring Sakic and his teammates, quickly became my favorite.
- Could you briefly tell us something about the team’s history?
The Colorado Avalanche originated as the Quebec Nordiques before relocating to Denver in 1995. Remarkably, they won their first Stanley Cup in their very first season in Colorado (1995-96), propelled by stars like Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, and Patrick Roy. They later added two more championships in 2001 and 2022.
- What’s a curious fact new fans should know?
Despite now being in different conferences, the Detroit Red Wings historically stand as Colorado’s fiercest rival. Their late 90s and early 2000s playoff clashes were legendary, marked by intense animosity, including a massive 1997 brawl involving twenty players and numerous penalties.
- Which star player should they pay attention to?
The Colorado Avalanche’s marquee player is center Nathan MacKinnon, widely regarded as one of the world’s elite talents. Not far behind is Cale Makar, often hailed as the NHL’s top defenseman. Other key players to watch include Martin Necas and Brock Nelson.
- Name (and, if you wish, where to find you, social media, etc.):

- How did you become a fan of this team?
My introduction to ice hockey came at age 13, playing NHL95 at my cousins’ home. For years, we played subsequent game editions, even full seasons with our own teams on the same console, moving to Xbox by 2002. We then bought skates, sticks, and pucks, heading to local parks to mimic our favorite players with no formal training. I was destined to be an Avalanche fan. As a Barcelona resident who loved snowboarding, their colors resembled FC Barcelona’s, and their snow-themed logo resonated. Watching Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg play with their incredible roster solidified my devotion, though initially, we admired many stars across the league like Modano, Yzerman, Lindros, Pavel Bure, Selanne, and Kovalev, irrespective of rivalries.
- Could you briefly tell us something about the team’s history?
The Colorado Avalanche essentially began with the relocation and rebranding of the Quebec Nordiques. Their entry into the NHL was nothing short of spectacular: they captured the Stanley Cup in their inaugural season, 1995-96, a feat unmatched by any new or relocated franchise in the modern era. They’ve since added two more championships in 2000-01 and 2021-22. With only a few forgettable seasons, the Avalanche have consistently remained a competitive force, navigating the typical cycles of peak performance and rebuilding that all teams experience.

- What’s a curious fact new fans should know? For example, about players, the city, fans, rivalries, the mascot…
Denver’s elevation, approximately 1600 meters (5280 feet) above sea level, isn’t just a fun fact—it provides a distinct competitive advantage when the team plays at home. Throughout their NHL tenure, Colorado has forged many rivalries, but none compare to the intensity with the Red Wings in the early 2000s, marked by massive player brawls and incredibly tense games. Personally, the Minnesota Wild are now the team that fuels my competitive fire.
- Which star player should they pay attention to?
Currently, Nathan MacKinnon is a must-watch player. He embodies speed, power, and raw talent—not merely a star, but one of the world’s absolute best. He consistently makes things happen on the ice! And I must also highlight Cale Makar, widely considered the NHL’s premier defenseman. His impeccable positioning, exceptional game vision, and constant offensive contributions, coupled with his defensive prowess, are truly remarkable.
- In summary, why should someone become a fan of your team?
The Avalanche embody pure passion, like an unstoppable snowstorm. Having followed them for nearly 30 years, I now feel a deep personal connection to the team, as if intrinsically linked to the city of Denver through hockey—a bond stronger than any I have with my hometown teams in other sports.
Dallas Stars – Dallas, Texas, United States
- Name (and, if you wish, where to find you, social media, etc.):
I’m Inés A., better known as @osodegominola on Twitter.
- Which team are you a fan of?
Regrettably, the Dallas Stars.
- How did you become a fan of this team?
I started watching the NHL during Chicago’s heyday. As Dallas frequently played them, and at the time, the Stars had a very aggressive, entertaining offensive style (before Bowness arrived and changed things, let’s just say), I developed an affection for them.
- Could you briefly tell us something about the team’s history?
The Dallas Stars originated as the Minnesota North Stars before relocating to Dallas in 1993, establishing the franchise we know today. This history fuels a significant rivalry with the current Minnesota team, extending beyond their shared division and regular-season matchups. They famously clinched the Stanley Cup in 1999 against the Buffalo Sabres!
- What’s a curious fact new fans should know? For example, about players, the city, fans, rivalries, the mascot…
Dallas currently feels like ‘Little Finland,’ boasting five Finnish players, including high-caliber talents like Heiskanen and Rantanen (a notable 24-25 season trade). Despite Texas not being a traditional hockey state, the stadium consistently draws large, vocal crowds, especially creating an electric atmosphere during the playoffs.
- Which star player should they pay attention to?
The Stars operate as a cohesive unit, meaning they don’t necessarily have one singular, dazzling star like some other teams. However, defensively, Heiskanen is outstanding, excelling not only in his own zone but also significantly contributing to offense. Upfront, Rantanen and Robertson are currently the key players to keep an eye on.
Anyways, here’s Miro Heiskanen. pic.twitter.com/XL9qwRZz47
— Dallas Stars (@DallasStars) May 1, 2024
Though, as I said, this is a team that currently has more than 9 players above 20 goals, which doesn’t usually happen.
- In summary, why should someone become a fan of your team?
Why become a fan? Perhaps for the sheer entertainment? Or because the green jersey pairs perfectly with the blackness your soul takes on after consecutive conference final losses? I’m not sure. All teams bring their share of suffering, I suppose, but with the Stars, I’ve also found immense joy in proving doubters wrong.

Nashville Predators – Nashville, Tennessee, United States
- Name (and, if you wish, where to find you, social media, etc.):
Jordi Corrales, Nashville Predators fan since the early 2000s.
- How did you become a fan of this team?
I’m not entirely sure what drew me to them; perhaps it was simply that they were the league’s newest franchise at the time. Regardless, I gifted my brother his first Preds jersey in September 2001 😍.
- Could you briefly tell us something about the team’s history?
For years, the Predators were among the league’s bottom dwellers, eventually evolving into a consistently formidable opponent, though without significant playoff triumphs. Our pinnacle came in the 2017 finals, where we narrowly lost to the Penguins in six games (we firmly believe ‘Sissons scored’ in Game 6!).
And so it begins… #PITvsNSH pic.twitter.com/z6f72XEmVL
— Pittsburgh Penguins (@penguins) May 29, 2017
- What’s a curious fact new fans should know? For example, about players, the city, fans, rivalries, the mascot…
Nashville is a favorite destination for visiting fans, known for its vibrant atmosphere as the country music capital. The Bridgestone Arena itself is famed for its loud and enthusiastic environment. Our primary rivalry was with Detroit until their conference realignment, shifting subsequently to Chicago.
- Which star player should they pay attention to?
Our top players, both expected to compete in the Olympics, are captain Roman Josi for Switzerland and Filip Forsberg for Sweden. Any significant positive play for the Predators almost certainly involves them. Our starting goaltender is also set to start for Finland.
- In summary, why should someone become a fan of your team?
European hockey enthusiasts should absolutely back the Predators! We boast some of the finest talents from this side of the Atlantic, and fans should seize the opportunity to experience the vibrant city of Nashville and the electric atmosphere of the Bridgestone Arena!
St. Louis Blues – St Louis, Missouri, United States
- Name (and, if you wish, where to find you, social media, etc.):
Alfredo (Collins on X: @comentacollins)
- How did you become a fan of this team?
I began watching the NHL in the 80s, initially favoring the Red Wings. However, when Brett Hull burst onto the scene in St. Louis in the early 90s, forming an exciting team that even Wayne Gretzky later joined, I became a devoted follower. My major highlight so far was the 2018-19 Stanley Cup win. Now, in a rebuilding phase, patience is key, but I’m optimistic about the future. We just need that next franchise player to lead us back to the Cup in the coming decade.
- Could you briefly tell us something about the team’s history?
The St. Louis Blues joined the NHL during its initial expansion and have since become a widely followed team across the USA, not just in Missouri, consistently competing in the Western Conference. Next year marks their 60th anniversary. Beyond stars like Gretzky and Hull, the franchise has seen legends such as Scotty Bowman, Ken Hitchcock, Grant Fuhr, Paul Kariya, and the iconic Jacques Plante grace their roster or coaching staff.
On this day in 1968, the Blues used three goaltenders in a game against the Rangers. Glenn Hall starts but is ejected. Robbie Irons comes in to relieve him but gets injured. Finally, Jacques Plante enters and secures the win #AllTogetherNowSTL pic.twitter.com/8570R4bnn7
— Mike Commito (@mikecommito) November 13, 2017
- What’s a curious fact new fans should know? For example, about players, the city, fans, rivalries, the mascot…
In my opinion, the Blues’ 2018-19 season stands as one of the NHL’s most incredible achievements. Remarkably, they were dead last in the entire league by January of that year. Yet, through an extraordinary turnaround, they went on to win the franchise’s first-ever Stanley Cup. This miracle was orchestrated by the arrival of coach Craig Berube and the unwavering commitment of players like Ryan O’Reilly, Pat Maroon, Vladimir Tarasenko, and the exceptional goaltending of Jordan Binnington.
- Which star player should they pay attention to?
Currently, the roster is in a rebuilding phase, guided by a highly competent coach. Several players are poised for significant roles, including Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg, who joined from the Oilers last year and show immense promise. Veterans Colton Parayko and Brayden Schenn still offer considerable impact. Above all, Jordan Binnington, often controversial but in my opinion a perennial top-five goaltender, deserves appreciation. I hope he continues to guard the net for years to come, eventually passing the torch to his heralded successor, Swedish prospect Love Harenstam.
- In summary, why should someone become a fan of your team?
For new fans, I’d emphasize that the Blues are building a winning team. Things are being managed effectively, and they are poised to bring significant joy and success again very soon.
Utah Mammoth – Salt Lake City, Utah
- Name (and, if you wish, where to find you, social media, etc.):
Crystal Ingram
- How did you become a fan of this team?
My boyfriend, a sports enthusiast, sought a shared passion. He bought tickets for the Grizzlies, our local ECHL team (now relocating to New Jersey). We sat directly behind the penalty box, and the entire evening was spectacular. I immediately told him we should do it again. Six weeks later, the Coyotes’ move to Utah was announced. We attended the welcome event and have been wholeheartedly devoted ever since. We’ve become avid fans, watching every game, often in person, and even incorporated the team’s colors into our hockey-themed wedding last month, complete with a stadium food stand!
- Could you briefly tell us something about the team’s history?
While most players and staff transferred to Salt Lake City from the now-disbanded Arizona Coyotes, the Coyotes’ historical records did not accompany them. Technically, the Utah Mammoth are a new expansion franchise, established in April 2024. The organization embodies a unique blend of fresh beginnings and seasoned expertise, brimming with excitement and a promising future.
- What’s a curious fact new fans should know? For example, about players, the city, fans, rivalries, the mascot…
Utah currently lacks official rivalries, though several are already brewing, with Colorado being the most likely contender. Our mascot, Tusky, is the league’s newest addition, introduced this year by dramatically bursting forth from a block of ice.

- Which star player should they pay attention to?
We boast a roster of emerging stars and some of the NHL’s most underrated talents. Captain Clayton Keller notably led the U.S. team to victory in the 2025 World Championship, securing their first gold since 1933. Nick Schmaltz leads the league in crucial stick checks, many directly contributing to wins. Despite recent injury layoffs, Logan Cooley remains one of our leading scorers. However, Dylan Guenther is the player who excites me most. A natural sniper with a powerful shot, he scored the Mammoth’s inaugural goal in 2024 and has been a top league performer in game-winning goals for two years running, including a memorable overtime winner against the Flyers on February 4, 2025 – a game we attended for my son’s birthday, and Dylan instantly made him a Mammoth fan! Beyond his offensive prowess, Dylan has dedicated this season to honing his defensive skills and special teams play, showing remarkable week-to-week improvement, even for a rookie.
DYLAN GUENTHER HAT TRICK! 🔥🔥🔥 pic.twitter.com/jppHc0u8tJ
— Utah Mammoth (@utahmammoth) January 1, 2026
This is a dynamic and incredibly entertaining team to watch. They’re destined for great things. Moreover, they’re genuinely good individuals with big hearts, already making a significant positive impact on our community in their short time here. We’re in a strong Wild Card position (at the time of this interview) and anticipate making the playoffs this year. We don’t expect it to be long before our team lifts Lord Stanley’s Cup. It’s exhilarating to follow them now, and their character and leadership ensure my unwavering support, win or lose.
