As the Stanley Cup Playoffs continue, the National Hockey League is in the process of unveiling the finalists for its major awards for the 2024-25 season.
The finalists for the Calder Trophy, awarded to the league`s top rookie, were announced during the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery. The three players nominated are Macklin Celebrini of the San Jose Sharks, Lane Hutson of the Montreal Canadiens, and Dustin Wolf of the Calgary Flames.
Hutson stands out as only the fourth defenseman in the modern era (since 1943-44) to lead all rookies in points, achieving 66. He joins Bobby Orr (41), Brian Leetch (71), and Quinn Hughes (53) in this exclusive group. His 60 assists tied Larry Murphy (Kings, 1980-81) for the most assists ever by a rookie defenseman in NHL history. Should he win the Calder, he would be the third Canadiens player to receive the award in the expansion era (since 1967-68), following Brendan Gallagher (2012-13) and Ken Dryden (1971-72).
The league also recently confirmed that Aleksander Barkov has won the Selke Trophy for the second consecutive year. He was chosen over fellow Florida-based players Anthony Cirelli and Sam Reinhart, capping another outstanding season at both ends of the rink. The Panthers` captain played a key role in his team ranking seventh in the NHL for goals-against per contest (2.72) and tenth in penalty-killing percentage (80.7%).
The remaining NHL Awards will be announced daily throughout mid-May. The official 2025 NHL Awards ceremony is scheduled for June 2025, with the exact date yet to be determined.
